Romney's Religion

...

To those claiming Mormonism is a cult:

I would first challenge you (as a sort of pedagogical exercise) to define the word “cult.” And don’t just copy the dictionary verbatim. That would be no fun at all.

I find it interesting that when this Great Nation was founded several “mainstream” Christian denominations were really no older than Mormonism is now. Could it be that they too were once considered a cult? Gasp. I wonder how the Church of England labeled those then very “unconventional” Christians. My how time does change things.

Now seriously, someone please remind me why we can’t seperate our politics from our religion. I wrote recently that “a president’s (or would be president’s) religion should be considered only inasmuch as it defines his/her morality.” I stand by that. It’s a shame Romney feels compelled (for whatever reason) to give this speech. To my deep chagrin, I find myself asking—in maudlin fashion—the question, “have we really made no progress as a nation?” But it’s true.
